Full description Embark on a 1-day trek to Mount Kenya from Nairobi. Hike through the forest, bamboo, rosewood, and heather zones to Old Moses Camp at 3300 meters. See the 2 Mount Kenya peaks of Nelion and Batian from 3600 meters. Be picked up from your Nairobi hotel and drive to Nanyuki town, the capital of Laikipia County. From Nanyuki Town, drive toward Mount Kenya to the Sirimon gate at 2650 meters. The distance between Nanyuki and Sirimon Gate is 23 kilometers. Upon completion of park entry formalities at the Sirimon Gate, begin a 3½-hour hike through the forest, bamboo, rosewood, and heather zones to Old Moses Camp at 3300 meters. Gain 740 meters on the ascent and begin to truly acclimatize. The forest and bamboo are home to hundreds of buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, and a plethora of bird species. Hike a little higher about 1 kilometer from Old Moses Camp to 3600 meters to see the 2 Mount Kenya peaks of Nelion and Batian next to each other. These peaks are climbed only by professional alpinists. After taking pictures, descend down from 3600 meters to Old Moses Camp at 3300 meters for a picnic lunch. After lunch, descend down for 9 kilometers (1.5 hours) to Sirimon Gate where you get your driver guide and transfer back to Nairobi. Arrive back to Nairobi and be transferred to your hotel.
Your adventure begins with pickup you from your Nairobi hotel/residence at 6:00AM. After driving for approximately 1 hour, you will begin the ascent at 6,000 feet. Like all good uphill hikes it will lull you into a sense of false security with a slow gentle rise to the first peak. This will give you the chance to get your lungs and limbs freed up for the second section, which is the best section. At the end of each section there is a rest point where you can prepare yourself for the next part of your journey. You will have started early to avoid the heat of the sun, but by the time you reach the end of the second section you will have generated plenty of your own heat. This hike is not an easy hike, but is achievable by people of average fitness. Your guide will accompany you all the way to the top. The whole tour is only about 8–9 kilometers long but very steep, so that the round-trip from the park gate to Longonot Peak takes around 4 hours. At the conclusion of your tour you will have an optional visit to Lake Naivasha for a sunset boat ride to see hippos, before your return drive to Nairobi with drop-off at your hotel or airport.
